We are proud to present to you our second place winner of our first Gore Girl contest at this past year’s International Horror and Sci-Fi Festival: Hellen Raiser! She did an amazing job (As did all the ladies involved) and she really impressed the shit out of us with her horror knowledge as well as charisma in front of the camera.
I think I come across as a girlie girl who loves shoes (true, I want ruby red slippers) loves hip-hop (untrue, I love metal, classic rock and the Foo Fighters!) loves MTV (untrue, whatever happened to music videos?) and loves romantic comedies (mostly untrue, I gotta have my horror fix).
But really, I’m just a goofy, average girl who has interests all over the place. I was a band nerd in high school and taught percussion for two years. I love reading and when I’m not busy studying for school; you can find me reading a couple books and magazines. I love painting and drawing and would love to take a life drawing class. Mainly though I love to write! I used to write stories when I was younger, excelled at English and was an editor for MCC’s paper.
Now I’m finishing my degree in journalism at ASU and currently write for ASU’s State Press Magazine. For me, writing is a way to connect with people and discuss issues that I feel are really important (like the environment, women’s issues, issues in politics and social issues, esp. when it comes to health). I ultimately want to write for Glamour magazine and work towards influencing other women to get involved with causes that inspire them.
ICSYB - First movie that scared the shit out of you?
Hellen Raiser - The Ring. When she comes out of the TV it is absolutely terrifying! ICSYB - Any celebrity slaughtered, who would it be and why?
Hellen Raiser - Jessica Simpson, with Tony Romo forced to watch. She puts up that goody two shoe, stupid blonde act and it’s annoying as hell.
ICSYB - If you had to be killed by a villain who would it be and how would you go?
Hellen Raiser - Any vampire because it’s quick and seductive. It’s better than getting slashed, eaten alive by cannibals or placed in a wood chipper.
ICSYB - If the dead rose, where would you hold up and defend yourself?
Hellen Raiser - I should get to work on a treehouse. Doesn’t look like the dead can climb trees.
ICSYB – What is your favorite death scene in a horror movie?
Hellen Raiser - Definitely when Johnny Depp gets pulled by Freddy Krueger through his bed. The bloody geyser was fucking awesome!
ICSYB – Who is your favorite of the classic horror monsters?
Hellen Raiser - Dracula. Vampires are so sexy!
ICSYB - Has a spooky movie ever given you bad dreams?
Hellen Raiser - The Grudge still gives me nightmares. I’m always afraid of that little boy rising up by the side of my bed. The Japanese know how to terrify people.
ICSYB - What are your top five horror movies of all time?
Hellen Raiser - 1. Psycho – Classic! I love the end where Norman Bates gives that evil psychotic grin in the police station. 2. Hellraiser – There’s just something about Pinhead. 3. Re-Animator - It was different from what other films had done and Herbert West as a character is just so much fun to watch. 4. Prince of Darkness – John Carpenter is a film genius! I know most people pick Halloween but I think Prince of Darkness is extremely creepy and I love Alice Cooper’s cameo in it. 5. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon – Most people don’t know about this film but it’s awesome! Check it out for something different.
ICSYB - What film is the scariest of all time?
Hellen Raiser - I’m Catholic so definitely The Exorcist. I know for a fact from a priest that yes possessions do happen and they only happen if you allow the presence to enter you. So The Exorcist terrifies me!
ICSYB - Horror icon you’d totally get busy with?
Hellen Raiser - Pinhead. He’s so kinky; who knows what he has up his sleeve!
ICSYB - Which do you prefer: Fast or slow zombies?
Hellen Raiser - Seeing how I’ve never shot a gun before, I’m hoping for slow zombies. That way I have a better chance of shooting them in the head after a few tries.
ICSYB - Would you ever spend the night at Camp Crystal Lake?
Hellen Raiser - What about Camp Arawak, from Sleep Away Camp? I think I could take Angela over Jason.
ICSYB - I wouldn't mind taking Pamela Springsteen either, haha. I thought she was hotter than Felissa Rose! Which thriller/horror you would like to see remade for the big screen?
Hellen Raiser - Does I Am Legend count?
ICSYB – Yea, it has the Devil. And any movie with Tom Cruise is horrific!
Hellen Raiser - The latest Will Smith version was atrocious. Someone who has read the book and appreciates Matheson’s work needs to re-do the film.
ICSYB – Yea, but you can’t fuck with The Omega Man with Heston. Here is my favorite question, if you became a creature of the night and could pick anyone you’d want to eat alive, who would you choose?
Hellen Raiser - Bill O’Reilly. Someone needs to shut him up!
